Professor Chen Jianlin expressed gratitude for the warm reception by KoGuan School of Law and briefly introduced the latest developments of the Faculty of Law at the University of Melbourne. The two sides had in-depth discussions on teacher exchange visits, summer school programs, joint training dual-degree programs, and other topics. Both sides expressed their expectation to carry out cooperation in more fields such as foreign-related rule of law, academic research, and talent cultivation on the basis of the existing cooperative relationship.
After the talks, Professor Chen Jianlin delivered an academic lecture titled "Legal Research Methods: Treating Law as a Social Fact—Taking Cases of Fraudulent Rape as Examples" for the faculty and students of KoGuan School of Law. The lecture was hosted by Professor Guo Yanjun, Associate Dean of KoGuan School of Law, and joined by discussants including Associate Professor Zhou Mingchuan, Associate Professor Yu Jiajia, Assistant Professor Xu Shuhao, and Assistant Professor Lan Xueyou.
Taking the judicial practice of "fraudulent rape cases" across jurisdictions as a starting point, Professor Chen Jianlin deeply analyzed the identification logic of "fraudulent sexual intercourse" in different judicial systems by combining legal provisions and typical cases from Mainland China, Hong Kong (China), India, Singapore, and other regions. He pointed out that law is not only a textual norm but also a reflection of social facts. By comparing the essential differences between doctrinal legal research and socio-legal research methods, Professor Chen emphasized that the latter can make up for the shortcomings of traditional research and promote the dynamic integration of legal theory and practice.
