Hosted by KoGuan School of Law at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the 2026 Chinese Law Global Summer Program ran successfully from July 13 to July 26. Over the course of two intensive weeks, outstanding law students from countries and regions around the world gathered at SJTU to explore contemporary developments in China's legal system through English-taught academic courses while gaining first-hand insights into Chinese society and culture through immersive field visits. The program offered a rewarding summer learning experience that combined academic excellence, global perspectives, and cross-cultural exchange.
The program featured seven English-taught courses covering both the foundations and frontier developments of Chinese law. Topics included Chinese Competition Law, Chinese Maritime Law, Chinese Intellectual Property Law, Labor Dispute Resolution in China, Contract Law under the Chinese Civil Code, Chinese Financial Law, and Global Climate Litigation and China's Climate Change Policies. Students also participated in academic discussions and group presentations throughout the program.
Drawing upon China's legal practice and representative case studies, the faculty introduced the evolution, distinctive features, and practical application of China's legal system while connecting the courses with current international legal issues. Through case analysis, classroom discussion, and comparative legal research, students deepened their understanding of Chinese law and further strengthened their capacity for international legal communication and comparative legal studies.
To integrate academic learning with legal practice, the program organized visits to several leading legal institutions, including Shanghai International Arbitration Center, Sunhold Law Firm, and Hylands Law Firm. During these visits, participants observed arbitration hearings, learned about arbitration procedures and case management, and attended presentations by experienced legal practitioners on cross-border legal services and international legal practice. These activities enabled students to gain a deeper understanding of China's legal service system and the country's achievements in advancing the rule of law while effectively bridging classroom learning with real-world legal practice.
Beyond the classroom, a rich variety of cultural activities provided students with valuable opportunities to experience China from multiple perspectives. Participants visited the university museum to learn about Shanghai Jiao Tong University's more than 130-year history and educational traditions. They also enjoyed a night cruise along the Huangpu River, appreciating Shanghai's iconic skyline and vibrant urban landscape. Cultural excursions to historic landmarks such as Longhua Temple and City God Temple of Shanghai introduced students to traditional Chinese architecture, religious culture, and local customs. Visits to West Bund Museum and Shanghai Museum East further enriched their appreciation of Chinese history, art, and civilization.
During the weekend, students traveled to Suzhou for a cultural excursion, where they explored the city's renowned classical gardens and traditional water towns, gaining a deeper appreciation of China's rich historical and cultural heritage. Participants also took part in a range of traditional Chinese cultural activities, engaging with the country's cultural traditions through interactive experiences.
The program concluded with student group presentations on the theme "How Do Nations Regulate AI?" Working in teams, participants examined and compared approaches to artificial intelligence governance in different jurisdictions, analyzing legislative frameworks, regulatory mechanisms, and emerging policy trends. Following the presentations, faculty members offered comments and engaged students in lively discussions on the legal challenges posed by AI and the future development of international regulatory frameworks.
As one of KoGuan School of Law's flagship international programs, the Chinese Law Global Summer Program continues to leverage the School's academic strengths and global partnerships to provide international students with an important platform for understanding China's legal system and the country's rule-of-law development.
