Second International Student Forum at KoGuan Law School, Shanghai Jiao Tong University

On September 29, the international program at KoGuan law school has organized the second international student forum, on the topic of “Discussing Chinese Law & Legal Market”.

The main purpose of the event was to invite two distinguished guest speakers that practice law in China to share their experience in practicing law in China. The students and guests had the opportunity to introduce themselves and exchange their thoughton Chinese law; and importantly they will have an opportunity to receive important insights from successful foreign lawyers in China.

The event was hosted by Assistant Dean and Prof. Hou Liyang, who has introduced the guests and thanked for visiting to talk to students.  Mr. Charles Stone (Managing Associate at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP) talked about what Chinese language tells us about the Chinese attitude towards law. He discussed the importance of knowing Chinese culture for being able to work with them more effectively as a lawyer. He talked about the differences between the between US clients and Chinese clients emphasizing that a simple miscommunication can affect the deals negatively. Mr. Asen Velion (KoGuan Alumni; International Counsel at Co-Effort Law Firm) addressed and discuss the positive and negative aspects of starting a legal career in China, from perspective of a foreigner working in a Chinese law firm. He talked about all the challenges that he had to go through, and underlined many possible career tracks that students could take in China.

The talks were followed by Q&A session, where students had the opportunity to ask question on specific pointes there were interested, for getting more insights.
