School Scholarship for International Students

In alignment with China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Ministry of Education's Action Plan for Promoting the Joint Construction of the Belt and Road Education Initiative, KoGuan School of Law, with the support of Yuanzhu Law Firm, has established the Yuanzhu Belt and Road Pioneer International Student Scholarship. This scholarship aims to attract and support outstanding international students from BRI countries and beyond to pursue degrees at our institution, fostering deeper collaboration with universities in BRI countries and expanding ties with other institutions worldwide. By doing so, the scholarship contributes to building an education community within the Belt and Road framework and promoting global educational cooperation.

Eligible BRI countries are defined by the official list published on the Belt and Road Portal (https://www.yidaiyilu.gov.cn/country), while applicants from other nations are also encouraged to apply this scholarship.

I. Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. Be an international student from a BRI or non-BRI country applying for a full-time master's or doctoral degree at KoGuan School of Law.

II. Scholarship Quotas and Awards

1. Scholarship Quotas

  • First Prize: 1 recipient
  • Second Prize: 1 recipient
  • Third Prize: 2 recipients

2. Award Amounts

  • First Prize: RMB 50,000 per recipient
  • Second Prize: RMB 30,000 per recipient
  • Third Prize: RMB 10,000 per recipient

III. Application Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

1. Hold a valid foreign passport, be friendly toward China, and be in good physical and mental health.

4. Demonstrate willingness to participate in the school's international outreach activities, including collaborating with institutions from their home regions.

5. Students receiving full Chinese Government Scholarships or other equivalent full scholarships are generally not eligible.

6. Current students enrolled at KoGuan School of Law are not eligible.

IV. Application Process

1. Complete the Yuanzhu Belt and Road International Student Scholarship Application Form, available from the International Office or downloadable from the school’s website.

2. Submit applications during the designated period (typically April to May; specific dates will be announced).

3. Each applicant is eligible to receive funding from the Yuanzhu Belt and Road Pioneer International Student Scholarship only once. Upon being awarded any scholarship within this scholarship program, the applicant will no longer be eligible to apply for scholarships under the same program.

4. Required documents:

  • CV (in English or Chinese)
  • Copy of valid passport
  • Notarized highest degree certificate
  • Notarized transcripts from undergraduate level onwards
  • Proof of awards and honors
  • Valid language proficiency certificates (e.g., HSK, TOEFL, or IELTS)
  • Study and research plan in China
  • Scholarship usage plan
  • Recommendation letter from an external academic advisor
  • Acceptance letter from an SJTU supervisor (doctoral applicants only)

V. Selection and Review

1. Submit applications to the International Office, which forwards eligible materials to the Yuanzhu Belt and Road Pioneer International Student Scholarship Review Committee.

2. The committee comprises five members: four from the school leadership and faculty and one representative from Yuanzhu Law Firm. The scholarship recipients will be determined collectively by the committee through deliberation.

3. In cases of equally qualified applicants, priority will be given to those from BRI countries.

4. Results will be published on the school’s website for five working days. Appeals concerning procedural irregularities must be submitted in writing during the review period. Final decisions are subject to approval by the School’s Party and Administrative Joint Meeting. Upon approval by the Meeting, the final list of scholarship awardees will be confirmed, and official Scholarship Award Notifications will be issued to the selected students.

VI. Scholarship Disbursement and Management

1. Scholarships are disbursed in three installments via bank transfer:

(1)First installment (40%): Upon registration and verification of application documents.

(2)Second installment (30%): After the first academic year, contingent on a GPA of 3.3 or above.

(3)Third installment (30%):

  • Master’s students: Upon passing the thesis mid-term review.
  • Doctoral students: applicants must have at least one article (excluding book reviews) formally accepted for publication in a journal indexed by SCI, SSCI, or CSSCI by the end of their third academic year. They are required to submit proof of submission and acceptance for all their papers. Upon verification, the remaining 30% of the scholarship will be disbursed. If, due to exceptional circumstances (e.g., extended journal review periods), the publication cannot be completed by the end of the third academic year, applicants may submit a deferral request along with proof of the submission status. The school or relevant departments will review the request to determine whether to postpone the disbursement.

2. Scholarships may be revoked for any of the following reasons:

(1) Failing to complete the required procedures for enrollment, registration, or payment within the time frame specified by the university, regardless of the reason;
(2) Leaving the university for more than one month (excluding winter and summer vacations), regardless of the reason;
(3) Withdrawing from studies or formally applying for termination of enrollment for any reason;
(4) Failing any examinations during the period of study at the School;
(5) Violating national laws or regulations, committing serious infractions of university rules, receiving disciplinary actions, or engaging in other illegal behaviors that result in severe consequences or negative impacts;
(6) Refusing to participate in the School's internationalization initiatives or failing to cooperate with exchange activities between the School and institutions in the recipient’s home country or region;
(7) Any other circumstances warranting the revocation of the scholarship.

3. The International Office of KoGuan School of Law retains the right to monitor the recipients' proper use of the scholarship funds and review recipients' academic performance regularly.

VII. Interpretation of the Policy

The KoGuan School of Law reserves the right to interpret this policy.
