Law School Won the Championship in ICRC IHL Moot Court Competition

On Nov. 10, 2013, the 7th Red Cross International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Moot Competition, jointly organized by International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Red Cross Society of China and Fudan University Law School, closed successfully on Jiangwan campus, Fudan University. SJTU KoGuan Law School, one of the 26 teams from nationwide universities that participated in the competition, won the championship and would be funded by ICRC to take part in the 12th International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Moot for Asian-Pacific Universities in March 2014.

ICRC IHL Moot Court Competition is a national competition organized by ICRC with the aim to promote the international humanitarian law. Oralists from different law schools will submit their memorials and argue their positions as the Prosecutor or the Defendant to and before the judges, based on the quite complicated Mooting Problem concerning the international humanitarian law issues under heated debates, reflecting the most controversial conflicts in the real world. The case (Mooting Problem) used in International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Moot were formulated by ICRC legal experts, with experts in the field of international law and international humanitarian law from different countries and regions as judges.

Represented by Mr. Guangyu Pan (oralist), Ms. Yuan Wang (oralist), Ms. Kuangyi Yuan (team member) and instructed by Professor Matthias Vanhullebusch, KoGuan Law School defeated Beijing University of International Relations and Fudan University in the General Round, Peking University in the Quarter-Final, Peking University School of Transnational Law in the Semi-Final, and, finally, Renmin University in the Final.

Our oralists were praised by the judges, including Liu Daqun, the prestigious Judge of International Criminal Tribunal of Former-Yugoslavia, for their sophisticated and coherent legal argument, sense of detail and accuracy, polished advocacy skills and their eloquent presentation of facts and the law. They will march on to compete with another 24 best teams from countries all across Asia-Pacific Region, including Australia and New Zealand, in March 2014 in Hong Kong.

Congratulations to the KoGuan Law School team for winning the championship this year and KoGuan Law School will continue to support and encourage law students to participate in various national and international moot court competitions.
