The First International Students Legal Forum at Shanghai Jiao Tong University

On November 23, 2016 International office of KoGuan Law School has organized the First International Student Legal Forum, which has attracted much interest among the students. The forum was opened up with the speech of the Dean of KoGuan Law School, Ji Weidong. Dean Ji, has welcomed the initiative of the organizing the forum, thanked the guest speakers and students for attending. Dean Ji has given an overview of KoGuan law school, introduced the recent history of School and the main objectives for the future development.

The theme of the forum was “Practical Insights into Legal Profession in Law Firms and Academia”, which had the objective to give the students a quick glance on two main career paths in legal practice: law firms and academia.

The first distinguished guest speaker, Mr. Eddie Hsu, Partner at Morgan Lewis law firm’s Shanghai office, has given deep insights into choosing the career path of working in Law firms. Mr. Hsu has shared much personal experience in pursuing a legal career, his education and work experience in different industries. This has given the students the understanding of complexities and challenges that Big Law career has. Mr. Hsu has shared a number of advices on how to apply to law firms by sending cover letters and resumes, on how to get ready for interviews and much more.

The academic part of legal career was introduced by Dr . Mathias Vanhullebuch, an associate professor at KoGuan Law School. Mr. Vanhullebuch has shared much information about his university studies and his decision to pursue his academic career in China. He focused on several aspects of academia such as dissertation writing process, complexities involved in the publication process in reputable legal journals as well as his teaching experience in university. In the end, Mr. Vanhullebuch gave students several advices on continuously developing their skills for successful career.

The speeches were followed by various questions from students, among which were many PhD and Master’s students from KoGuan Law School, and also many exchange students.

The event has hosted a distinguished guest, Professor Winston Zee, former member of McKenzie's Global Executive Committee and former partner at Baker McKenzie, who has given many insights answering the questions of students, and giving a clear picture of characteristics in legal practice. 

The forum was conducted by the Director of International Program, Dr. Hou Liyang, who made the closing remarks by thanking guests and students for attending, and expressed his interest of hosting more forums in the future.
